Research has shown that by the time they graduate as many as 1/3 women and almost 1/6 men would have been sexually assaulted. But whilst sexual assault has consistently been, and still is, a common experience between young people, there is virtually no intergenerational community among survivors. The current government has pledged to reduce violence against women and girls (VAWG) by 50% within the next decade (Home Office, 2024). The new statutory guidance focuses on supporting pupils to have respectful relationships and highlights stereotypes based on sex, gender and sexual orientation, can normalise non-consensual behaviour or encourage prejudice (DfE, 2025).
Storytelling engages young people more meaningfully with sex education;
Real stories make it more compelling for young people to identify with the participants and their contexts;
A critical thinking pedagogical approach builds empathy and self-awareness built on young people’s input, perceptions and knowledge;
LGBTQ+ inclusivity is essential;
