THE PETITION
All About The Gusset

I paint you a picture: you’re walking in the park, to a restaurant, to work, when you’re suddenly overtaken but an unbearable itch on your privates because the inner pocket of your knickers, the GUSSET, is literally in the way of your anatomy.

Well, I say enough is enough.

I ask underwear manufacturers to design women’s knickers’ gussets based on real anatomies rather than aesthetic norms. I am asking for this structural design issue to be addressed with longer and wider gussets fully covering the vulva’s labia to avoid itching and discomfort and to include a wider range of labia size.

The Problem

The function of gussets in knickers is to reduce tension where fabrics typically pull, making garments more comfortable during movement. Gussets can be found in just about every type of underwear for women, from boyshorts to bikini panties to thongs. Current designs often cause discomfort and itching or daily irritation because of their inadequate coverage and poor fit.

Why it matters

Knickers design should not be based on bias when it comes to daily intimate comfort of half the world population. Moreover, providing longer and wider gussets does not compromise knickers’ style and individual preferences. Women and people with vulvas shouldn’t have to “adjust” their physical anatomy to underwear. Many women and people with vulvas report they want their comfort and dignity to be prioritized, and for anatomical diversity to be normalised.

The Bigger Picture

Many women I've come across harbour deep insecurities about the anatomy of their vulva. This is probably due to a lifetime of being bombarded with messages of what constitutes beauty. But we don't have to put up with punishing underwear!

Every day, countless women and individuals with vulvas face discomfort due to poorly designed knickers. The gussets, which are meant to provide comfort by reducing tension where fabrics typically pull, often fall short in covering the vulva properly, leading to itching and discomfort. This issue hits close to home for many, as it's an intimate matter that impacts daily life.

The current design of underwear often prioritizes aesthetic norms over actual anatomical needs, resulting in inadequate coverage and fit. It's time for underwear manufacturers to rethink their designs and create gussets that accommodate real anatomical diversity rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. By designing longer and wider gussets that fully cover the labia, we can eliminate unnecessary discomfort and ensure intimate wear caters to the needs of half the world's population.

Several women report wanting their comfort and dignity prioritized in intimate wear. We should not have to adjust our anatomy to fit our underwear. The solution doesn't require compromising style or individual preference. It's simply about including a wider range of labia sizes and normalizing anatomical diversity within the design process.

Addressing this structural design issue is not only about comfort but also about acknowledging the unique needs of individuals with vulvas. A redesign of women's knickers gussets can provide relief and validate the experiences of many.

Join me in calling for change. Sign this petition to urge underwear manufacturers to consider real anatomical needs in their designs, ensuring that comfort and dignity are prioritized for everyone. Together, we can make our voices heard and advocate for more inclusive and thoughtfully designed intimate wear.
